Living a Good Life

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long As People

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old dog named Belker.

The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very much attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good the four-year old Shane to observe the procedure.

They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'

The four-year old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

The message in this story for all human beings, is a simple one - love generously, live your life full of care for others and always speak with kindness.

One More Time for Mum

'I just don't have the time,' she said. 'So many things have changed since then.' 'But you love performing,' I said. 'Yes, yes I do,' she said softly. I could see it in her eyes. They sparkled at the very thought of it. She had this smile that only comes from sweet memories. Her arms were . . . read the full story >>>

Sometimes when all looks cream and brown.
When the haze of dust and heat.
Makes the intensity of our lives.
Dusty dry and incomplete.

Sometimes, when all our focus sees.
A vista of purple and grey.
Then, is the time to lift our hearts.
Encourage our minds to feel and pray.

Sometimes when our answer comes.
It begins with a drop, a sprinkle or tear.
Clouds rumble across the sky.
A torrent we see, a roar we hear.

Sometimes when rain obliterates the view.
Making mud and rivulets to flow.
Sometimes it is hard to see.
What good the elements can blow.

Sometimes when water washes and cleans.
Puddles lay all around.
It's then a Miracle is made.
Everywhere beauty will soon be found.

Sometimes, it is the tears.
Through all the haze of pain.
That leads to the beauty yet to come.
The Miracle appearing after the rain.
