Technology isn't Life

I had spent an hour in the bank with my Dad as he had to transfer some money. I couldn’t resist and asked . . . 'Dad why don’t we activate your internet banking.'

'Why would I do that?' he replied.

'Well you won't have to spend an hour here for things like a money transfer. You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so much easier for you!'

I was so excited about introducing him into the world of internet banking.

He asked . . . 'So if I do that, I won't have to step out of the house?'

'Yes, Yes' I said and I then told him how even groceries can be ordered on line and delivered to the door and how Amazon also delivers your order right to the door.

His answer left me tongue tied and somewhat flabbergasted.

He said 'Since I entered the bank, I have met three of my friends. I have chatted for a while with the staff who know me very well by now. You know I live alone and this is the company I need, so I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have enough time; it is the physical touch and the conversations that I crave.'

He went on to say 'two years back I got sick, the store owner from whom I buy my fruit came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried, also when your Mum fell down and hurt her ankle while on her morning walk, that same grocer saw her and immediately got his car to bring her home as he knew where she lived.'

'Would I still have the human touch if everything became online?'

'Why would I want everything delivered to me and force me to interact only with my computer?'

'I like to meet and know the person that I am dealing as it creates bonds and a relationship'.

'Does Amazon deliver all this as well?'

'I think Technology isn't life - we still need to spend more time with people not devices'.
